Richard A.
Weihsmantel
May 28, 1934 — Jun 13, 2025
Des Plaines
With deep sorrow and love, we announce the passing of Richard Weihsmantel, who departed this life peacefully on Friday, June 13, 2025, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease and bone marrow cancer. Richard was born in Chicago, Illinois to Werner and Trudy (Mayhak) Weihsmantel. Richard grew up in Chicago and attended Lane Tech High School and graduated in 1952. After high school, Richard served in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1960. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Richard served in the National Guard. Richard worked as an electrical engineer for NuArc (a company that produced photography products) for 35+ years. Richard married Elfriede "Elly" Weihsmantel in 1962 and they remained married untied her death in July 2019, From 1965 through 1979 Richard & Elly lived in Streamwood, Illinois with their children, Jim and Trudy and "Oma" — Elly's mother. In 1979, Richard and family moved to Des Plaines, where he lived until 2024. Richard could never sit still, always tinkering away at something. He loved cars and could tell the model, make and year of a car by looking at its bumper. Richard took great pride in maintaining the landscaping of his home in Des Plaines. He was a loving grandfather to all of his grandchildren and never stopped asking how they were doing. After Elly's passing, Richard became very involved in church, specifically the "Wednesday Work Crew", a group of retired men who maintained the grounds of the church-inside and out. The Wednesday Work Crew also went on annual missions trips to places that needed their help. Richard loved every minute of those trips. Richard was fun, social, young at heart and full of life.
Richard is survived by his children, Jim Weihsmantel and Trudy (Chris) (Weihsmantel) Kain, and grandchildren, Bruce, Adam, Kyle, and Noel. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Lillian Jahnke and Margaret Schroeder.
