Mona K. Kunio, born March 17, 1948 to Glen and Irma Petersen in North Platte, NE, died suddenly on April 25, 2022. Her loss is felt by many.
Mona spent her childhood in small-town Nebraska. She loved telling her grandkids about life on the farm and unique tales of growing up in rural Nebraska. After graduating from the University of Nebraska in 1970, Mona spent a few years teaching in Omaha, following which the call of the big city enticed her to move to Chicago. In Chicago she became a flight attendant with United Airlines and spent over four decades traveling around the world. Although Mona was born in a small town, she became just as comfortable traversing the streets of Paris or negotiating prices at a street market in Beijing. Her expertise was wide and varied, and her worldliness knew no bounds. She became a mother to Nicholas Kunio (Samantha) and Nora Kostro (Christopher), and everyone who knew her recognized that, in motherhood, Mona found her true calling. There was nothing she adored more than her kids.
If you met Mona, you most likely loved her.  She was the type of person who could meet you once, and for the rest of her life she would remember your name, where you were from, and who your kids and grandkids were. She leaves behind her son and daughter, four much-loved grandchildren (Jameson, Simon, Oliver, and Laurel), and her two brothers (Butch and Rodney). Her friends are too many to be named.
A funeral service is scheduled for May 14, 2022 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 605 W. Golf Rd., Mt Prospect, Illinois. Visitation with the family will be from 9:30 am until the time of service at 10:30 am. A luncheon at Canta Napoli will follow the service.
