Mary Florine
Nurre
Sep 13, 1934 — May 31, 2021
Arlington Heights
Mary Florine Nurre (nee Rumfield), 86, passed away on Monday, May 31, 2021, at ManorCare of Arlington Heights.
Mary was born September 13, 1934, to Edna (nee Brock) and Ralph Rumfield in Parkersburg, WV. Mary grew up in Circleville, Ohio, and spent summers in Chillicothe with her beloved grandfather Fred Brock. She had very fond memories of her summers spent there and has remained close with her childhood friends. Mary was a long-time resident of Des Plaines, IL where she resided after moving from Ohio with her mother Edna, sister Karen, brother David and Aunt Jean in the late 1950's. Mary worked for United Airlines when she met Eugene Nurre while commuting by train to Chicago. Their initial meeting was a bit fraught, when Gene, ever the gentleman, caught her by her derriere as she fell backwards while boarding the train, needless to say Mary took great offense to that kindness and glared at him...They began dating and were married six months later, and the following year welcomed their daughter Juliana, and year and a half later, son Vincent. After her daughter was born, Mary became a full-time mom, involved in PTA, CCD, and Scouting, and volunteered at church, various political campaigns and at the polls. She was a fun mom, being a big kid herself, she would play games, and make mischief along with the kids. She loved to bake and try new recipes. She played cards with her friends and family and was on a bowling league for many years. She was a gardener and animal lover with many pets over the years. She enjoyed attending Broadway shows in Chicago and Lincolnshire, going out to eat, and shopping. Most of all she loved being a mom. In later life she volunteered regularly at St. Stephen's Protomartyr church, cleaning and helping in the gift shop, she drove folks to their doctors appointments and delivered for Meals on Wheels with her best friend Carol. Mary formed lifelong friendships with her childhood friends, through various church groups and the 'card club' gals, a core group of friends who have been supportive, and tight knit for over 50 years. When the kids were older, Mary worked at Burchard's Cleaners in Des Plaines where she remained for many years. She became friends with many of the long-time customers and delighted in getting to know them and their children. Jack, son of Vincent and his former wife Connie McGreevy, was Mary's pride and joy. She was a very doting grandmother and loved introducing him to her friends and her favorite waitresses. He is now a rising senior and hopes to enter the medical profession. She loved to sing; her favorite being, "When I Grow Too Old to Dream", so even after she was diminished by dementia, that song was something she would sing or whistle consistently throughout the day. Her friend Marie, who prior to Covid, was visiting her weekly at the nursing home, was surprised one day when Mary sang Christmas carols from memory (her faculties were severely diminished by that point). The family would like to thank all the nurses, aides, and staff at ManorCare for the exceptional care they provided her, especially during the pandemic. Mary was preceded in death by Eugene in 1999. In the end she passed peacefully. She will be missed by many, and her family wishes her friends and extended family condolences and sympathy for their loss.G.L Hills Funeral Home in Des Plaines will facilitate Mary's ashes being transferred and interred at Greenlawn Cemetery in Chillicothe, OH. Mary was generous with her time, and in that spirit, if so inclined, the family would like to suggest donating to help fund two programs through St. Stephen's Protomartyr Church in Des Plaines. The first program is the Peace and Justice Ministry with a weekly Children's Backpack Program, and the second is the St. Stephen's Table which provides a monthly take-out meal for families and individuals in need. Donations can be made to: St. Stephen Protomartyr, 1880 Ash Street, Des Plaines, IL 60018
