Obituary

Marion Louise Gyssler (nee Hammer) passed away December 17, 2024 at the age of 100. She was born May 23, 1924 to William 'Bill' and Agnes (nee Bergman) Hammer on her great uncle William Homeyer's farm, which is now part of Maryhill Cemetery. Soon after, Bill moved his family into the city of Park Ridge where Marion was raised going to Saint Andrews Lutheran School and Maine Township High School.

Marion worked for the Army and Navy Commission of the Lutheran Church in Chicago from June 1942 to April 1948.

Marion married Frank Joseph Gyssler of Chicago on May 15, 1948 and together moved to Des Plaines. Marion was a resident of Des Plaines until November 1, 2022 when she moved into Waverly Inn Memory Care Community in Arlington Heights. Marion was preceded in death by her husband Frank of 67 years in 2015 and brother Harry (Audrey) Hammer of Arlington Heights in 2023.

Marion was a very active member at the former Good Shepard Lutheran Church in Des Plaines making quilts, assembling school and health packets for World Relief, and serving dinners with the weekly Feed My Sheep program. Marion was an avid crafter over the years selling at various venues and gifting to family and friends.

Marion is survived by her seven children: Keith (Katherine), Gary (Kathy), Scott (Sharon), Wayne (Judith), Gregg, Gayle (Darren) Marvel, Glen (Gloria), 16 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be December 27 from 4:00pm to 8:00 pm at G.L. Hills Funeral Home, 745 Graceland Avenue, Des Plaines. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on December 28 at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Town of Maine Cemetery in Park Ridge. Funeral Care provided by G.L. Hills Funeral Home and Cremation Center.
