Obituary

John Larry Sartain slipped into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 18, 2020, virtually surrounded by his family. Larry, as his family knew him, was loving husband of 51 years to Diane (Schiller) Sartain; compassionate father to daughter, Nicole (Jeffrey) Scholpp; son, Eric (Elizabeth) Sartain; and beloved Poppa to Madelyn and Owen Scholpp and Edyn Sartain. Caring brother-in-law to Frank (Joan) Schiller and Valerie Schiller. Larry is preceded in death by his parents, James and Louise (Martin) Sartain; and siblings Robert (Elizabeth) Sartain, Sharlene (Louis) Morse, and Jane (Alton ) Cain. After moving to Chicago from his native Alabama, Larry, served in the US Army from 1966-1970, spending two active years in Korea. His family fondly remembers him reading his Bible over a cup of coffee each morning, sharing stories about his time in rural Alabama, relaxing on the porch swing after a long day, or cheering on the Alabama football team (Roll Tide!). He was always reading, spending time outdoors hiking in the local forest preserves, fishing, and gardening. Larry will most be remembered for his servant heart and gregarious personality. Private services will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2020 at G. L. Hills Funeral Home, 745 Graceland Ave., Des Plaines, IL; with a private graveside service following at  Irving Park Cemetery, 7777 Irving Park Rd., Chicago, IL. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America ( https://alzfdn.org/ ) or The Gideons International ( https://www.gideons.org/ ).
