Joan E.
Smith
Aug 4, 1933 — Jun 18, 2023
Prospect Heights
Joan Eileen Smith (nee Mannix), age 89, of Prospect Heights, Illinois was born into eternal life on June 18, 2023 at home surrounded by her family. She was born August 4, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois to the late James and Frances (nee Eddy) Mannix. Beloved wife of the late Donald Smith. Treasured mother of Donald Jr. (Cheryl) Smith, Robert (Terry) Smith, Bernadette (Ron) Colmone, Mary Ellen (Barry) Mueller, Joseph (Mary Jayne) Smith. Cherished grandmother of Jennifer (Jake), Jessica (Paul), Brian (Nikki), Colleen, Julianne (Eric), Joe (Kathleen), Erin (Tommy), Patrick (Erin), Danny (Gracie), Katie (Pat), Kyle, Tim, Kevin, Michael, Shannon, Kelly and Ryan. Proud great-grandmother of Ryan, Lincoln, Rowan, Brady, Riley, Taylor, Brooklynn, Dylan, Sawyer, Macie, Logan, Odin, Hayden and Brianna. Dear sister of the late Marian (Russel) Hinz, Betty (John) Quinlisk and James (Therese) Mannix. Loving aunt to many nieces and nephews, dear friend to many.
Joan grew up in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago, attended All Saints Grade School and St. Patrick Girls' High School. She loved the Chicago White Sox and grew up going to games at Comiskey Park, where she met her husband, Don, in the summer of 1955. They married May 11, 1957 and raised their five children in Niles. Both Joan and Don were active members of St. John Brebeuf Parish. They loved their time living on Olcott, which was filled with many wonderful family gatherings and lots of fun times with friends. They moved to Prospect Heights where they resided for 29 years. Joan loved daisies, red wine (with ice!), and baseball, but most of all, she enjoyed spending time with people she loved. You could often find Joan catching up with friends over coffee cake, visiting her childrens' homes bearing homemade chicken casserole, and cheering on her grandchildren in every and anything they did. She was exceedingly warm to everyone she encountered. Together with Don, she instituted many family traditions and was the center of the many memories that will be forever cherished. Joan was deeply devoted to her faith. She attended mass daily, and instilled in her family and friends the importance of prayer: "Don't Forget To Pray" - DFTP.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 22, 2023 from 10:00 am until the time of Mass at 11:00 am at St. Thomas Becket Church, 1321 N. Burning Bush Ln., Mt. Prospect, Illinois.
