Obituary

Helen Louise Harms (nee Ruesch), beloved wife of the late Richard Henry Harms , passed peacefully with Nancy at her side on July 9, 2022 at age 94. Helen was born November 21, 1927 at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston to George W. and Helen T. (nee Baumel) Ruesch. Helen was the dear sister of older brother George/Whitey (the late Dorothy) Ruesch and older sister to the late Ruth and Don Moberg, and aunt to many. Helen was the loving mother of two daughters, Judith/Judy (the late Paul) Kasper and Nancy Young. Nancy's former husband Dan was a constant in Helen's life helping her in every way. Helen was a very proud Grandmother of 8: Joy (Haris) Bijedic; Bradick (Carly) Young; Breanne (Paul) Abraham; Richard/Ricky (Danielle) Kasper; Hilary (Matt) Morse; Kevin (Becky) Young; Michael/Mike Kasper; and Kurt (Lauren) Young. She cherished her presence at Hilary's and Kurt's births. Next… 12 Great-Grandchildren – Helen's face would light up when they visited; and she would always "awww" and smile brightly when seeing pictures or videos of them. (Grandmother Judy): Hunter -1 (Joy/Haris); Genna and Jameson (Ricky/Danielle). (Grandmother Nancy): Beckett - 10, Rey - 5 and Brooks - 7 mos. (Bradick/Carly); Elizabeth- 20, Brayden - 8 and Avery -6 (Breanne/Paul); Lila - 6 mos. (Hilary/Matt); Madison/May -6 and Miles -3 (Kevin/Becky).

Visitation will be Saturday, July 16 at 11:30 am until the time of service at 12:30 pm at the G.L. Hills Funeral Home, 745 Graceland Avenue, Des Plaines, Illinois. Following the service, interment will be in St. Matthews Lutheran Cemetery, 8500 N. Shermer Road, Niles, Illinois just down the street from where Helen grew up.

After retirement Helen turned her attention to her interests: knitting – afghans, sweaters, Christmas stockings and ornaments; gorgeous Quick Stitch pictures she had matted and framed and various other crafts. She enjoyed making puzzles and played along with Jeopardy, solved Wheel of Fortune puzzles, loved watching Seinfeld and the Golden Girls. Helen had a love of learning and read the newspaper cover to cover. She knew the heartache of loneliness and loved her 14 years with her German shepherd, Caraway. You would find Helen working in her garden on beautiful days when she was able. It was hard for Helen to be active in life with chronic back pain which kept her from many family activities. Now she is with God and healed from every infirmity. Helen's love is in our hearts.
