Obituary

Grace, 92, was born July 20, 1929, in Chicago to Marta (Torkildsen) and Per Adolf Hoglund. She passed away peacefully on May 1, 2022, at the Lutheran Home in Arlington Heights surrounded by her loving family.

Grace is survived by her son Roy C. Hansen III and his wife Diane Vos Hansen of Barrington, her younger son, David Hansen and his wife Trish King of Chicago and San Francisco, and her youngest daughter, Susan Breternitz and her husband Bob of Barrington. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Naomi Grace and Annette Margaret Hansen, Mike and Lisa Breternitz, and David Salak. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Roy C. Hansen Jr, her eldest daughter, Lynne Hansen Salak, and her brother, Carl Robert Hoglund.

Grace excelled at school. She was salutatorian of her Taft High School graduating class. She also was an honors graduate of North Park Junior College (now North Park University), where she was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society.

Grace moved to Des Plaines in 1950 after her marriage to Roy, and she lived there most of the rest of her life. In the early years, she was a Cubs Scout den mother and an active member of the Des Plaines Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and church Circle officer. For the past 40-plus years Grace was a member of Des Plaines Christ Church (UCC), where she sang in the choir, and also participated in social groups, church council, the altar guild, Meals on Wheels, and as a volunteer driver for others who needed a ride to church. Grace and her daughter Lynne enjoyed a memorable joint 65th and 90th birthday celebration at Christ Church on July 20, 2019.

Grace worked for many years as a legal secretary with GE Credit Corporation. She also was a proud member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, where she served as a local chapter officer and president. Grace enjoyed water aerobics at the Des Plaines YMCA, as well as photography and traveling. After retirement, she traveled extensively, visiting Alaska, as well as numerous countries, including China, Japan, Russia, Poland, Egypt, Israel, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, England, Scotland, and Ireland.

Grace's primary passion was spending time with her family and friends. She had a wonderful smile, sense of humor and laugh, and a profound love for life, which she vigorously pursued to the fullest. She will be sorely missed.
