Obituary

George L. Meyer, age 99, passed away June 1, 2022. Beloved husband of 65 years to the late Bernadette L. Meyer. Loving father of Edward H. Meyer, Jeanne (Lawrence) Bidlack, Rosemarie Meyer and the late Carol J. Meyer. Proud grandfather of Erin Meyer, Courtney (Matt) Harless, Cameron Meyer, Tess Meyer, Colton Bidlack, Jacqueline Bidlack and Samantha Bidlack. George was also preceded in death by his parents George and Rose, his brother Robert, sister-in-law Dorothy, and daughter-in-law Marsha.
George was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a Purple Heart recipient, having served in the Pacific during World War II. George was an avid athlete, with soccer his true passion. He dedicated himself to soccer as a player, coach, manager, trainer and referee. He also served various officer roles in the National Soccer Association and Illinois Soccer Association and as a voting member and delegate to the USSFA. He coached the Schwaben A.C. to the Peel Cup '58, National Indoor '62, and US Amateur Cup '64 Championships, coached the US Men's National Team and, in the early days of professional soccer in the US, coached the Chicago Mustangs, St. Louis Stars and Chicago Cats. In 2006 he was inducted in the Illinois Soccer Hall of Fame. George also had a great love for gardening, camping, boating and all outdoor activities. George lived his life to the fullest and encouraged family and friends to do the same. He dedicated himself to his family, encouraged education and a strong work ethic, and he instilled in everyone a belief in community and service to others. He lived by example making weekly contributions to the local food pantry, and to many other charities throughout his life.
