Obituary

A beautiful new star appeared in the heavens on January 1, 2020. The world was fortunate to have had Eve in its midst for 91 years. There was no more loving, giving and selfless person than Eve. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, she met her beloved late husband Dan Hill while she was a student at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and discovered they had grown up four blocks from each other in Grand Rapids. Eve put her dream of becoming a commercial artist on hold to marry Dan in 1950.Eve was an only child of divorced parents, so was shuffled between homes without a good role model for marriage. But Eve and Dan made their own way, sticking together through three children and all the highs and lows of life through their 63 years of marriage. Although it was tough to make ends meet on a teacher's salary in the 1960's, Eve taught herself to cook and knew all of the grocery prices by heart. Good thing, too, since Dan would write her a grocery check for that exact amount! Her only "compensation" was the weekly bottle deposits from cartons of Tab! She also taught herself to sew, and made much of daughter Holly and Robin's clothing, costumes and high school dance formals. Eve served as a room mother, a member of the PTA, a Girl Scout leader and a Den Mother. She used her considerable artistic talents to create artwork for her daughters' elementary school Fun Fair and her 10- foot-tall Cat in the Hat painting greeted all visitors for the next 30 years to 970 Clark Lane. She did a beautiful series of watercolors to accompany a series of religious stories for the First Congregational Church in Des Plaines, where the family was a fixture since 1962. She also was the neighborhood animal lady who'd eye-dropper feed baby bunnies or little hairless baby birds. No doubt that is where Holly gained her compassion to rehabilitate little wildlife creatures. Eve stayed home to raise the children, and when Holly and Robin were in high school, went to work at a dental lab to pay for college costs. She never saw a dime of her paychecks, though, turning them over to Dan to put into the "college fund". She was the most generous and selfless person we ever knew and treated everyone she met like they were the most important person in the world. Eve and Dan doted on their grandchild, Rachel. They made numerous trips to Florida to visit Rachel and her parents Michael and Robin. Although they didn't do a lot of traveling, they did manage to make it to Europe once with Dan's siblings Sally and Ted. But mostly they spent their time at home, doing good works for the church, visiting their kids and enjoying their golden years together. Dan passed away in 2013, several years after Eve was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Those last years were hard on everyone. After Holly spent three years taking care of both parents, the decision was made to move Eve into an Alzheimer's residence in Madison near Holly's home, where she and her husband Rollie visited frequently and fed her dinner four times a week. Even when gripped by this awful disease she still maintained her sunny disposition, her great sense of humor and most of all her generous spirit. Eve is survived by her three children, Holly Hill-Putnam (Rollie), Robin Hill Rowan (Michael) and Daniel Hill (Sharon), granddaughter Rachel Rowan and sister-in-law Mary Miller (Bill) and her three daughters Cathy, Amy and Ann Marie. A celebration of her life will be held on Monday January 20, 2020 at G. L. Hill's Funeral Home, 745 Graceland Ave., Des Plaines, IL 60016 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens at 2501 E. Euclid Ave. in Arlington Heights. Online condolences can be sent to her children @ hollyrollie03@charter.net or mailed to Holly at 6603 Lake Rd., Madison, WI 53598. No flowers please but donations are sincerely appreciated to Agrace Hospice @ 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711 or to the First Congregational Church of Des Plaines @ 766 Graceland Ave., Des Plaines, IL 60018. We genuinely thank you for your friendship with Mom over the years and for keeping in touch with her after this horrible disease sapped her ability to communicate. Mom so treasured her friends from church and those she met through Dan's Marine Corps bombing squadron VMB 611 who continued to have reunions until just before Dad passed away. Everyone whose path through this life crossed hers was better as a result . She leaves behind a family who adored and respected her and was so very much shaped by her guidance. Our little corner of the world was better because she was in it!
