Des Plaines

Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" Lee Brodie (nee King), age 99, a resident of Des Plaines for almost 70 years passed away peacefully February 15, 2026. She was born December 11, 1926 in Fort Thomas, Kentucky to Pearl "Paul" and Edith (nee Ware) King.

Betty is survived by her loving daughter, Cynthia (David) Hoch; dearest grandchildren, Kristen (Kevin) and Robert (Elaine), and cherished great-grandson Henry. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Jack (Jean) King, beloved husband of 51 years, Edward "Steve" Brodie, and treasured grandson, Brian.

As a newlywed, Betty left Kentucky for Chicago and worked at the Merchandise Mart.  In later years she joined the suburban workforce as a secretary, embracing new challenges and taking on the computer world along the way.  She and Steve enjoyed playing bridge, collecting antiques, and traveling.

Betty was the most devoted, supportive, encouraging mom as well as a great listener and friend.  When she became affectionately known as "Grammy," she created countless treasured memories including making applesauce from the backyard apple tree, keeping a full cookie jar ready for every visit, perfecting her famous Thanksgiving gravy, and lovingly making baby clothes, blankets, Halloween costumes and each of her grandchildren's personalized Christmas stockings.  Henry loved his many visits and lunches with Great Grammy.  And how!

Betty was deeply proud of her family and found joy in tending her flower garden and participating in Bible study and book club with friends at the church she dearly loved. She will always be remembered for her firecracker personality, her spirited presence, and her fierce love of family. Betty's family extends a special thank you to the Lutheran Home staff for their support and compassionate care.
