Obituary

Edith Mae Johnson, nee Muto, age 98 of Prospect Heights, peacefully passed away on May 7, 2023 surrounded by family both physically and in prayer.

Edie was born in Evanston, IL on August 9, 1924 to the late Joseph and Edith Muto. She was the loving sister to the late Harry (Lois) and the late Ken (Patricia) Muto. Edie enjoyed a close relationship with her brothers and her sisters-in-law. They were a blessing in her life.

Growing up in the depression, Edie enjoyed the simple things in life. She spent her early years in Evanston, especially enjoying summertime outings to the beach, a rare but fun trip to the movie theater and giving her brothers a ride on her beloved bike. The family moved to Lincolnwood IL where Edie graduated from Niles East High School in 1942. She married the late Wally Johnson in 1948, later moving to Des Plaines where they raised their 4 children; Barbara of Arlington Heights, Nancy (Steve) Siles of Cary, Gary (Jenny) of Phoenix AZ, and Carol (Kevin) Casey of Wheaton.

Edie worked for many years for the city of Des Plaines in various departments, retiring in 1994. She enjoyed yearly family vacations to Wisconsin and Minnesota, lunch with friends, watching classic old movies, and road trips with her girlfriends. Edie volunteered as a Scout leader, as a PTA member, Sunday school teacher and church nursery volunteer, at the Des Plaines Food Pantry, and was a member of the League of Women Voters for 60 years. She took pride in voting in every election since 1945.

But Edie's greatest joy in life was her family. In addition to her children and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly, Edie is survived by her much loved 10 grandchildren; Emily (Ryan), Will (Jen), Joe (Becca), Mike, Ruthie, Libbie (Jordy), Andy (Ali), Ben, Natalie, and Sarah. Edie was so proud to be great-grandma (GiGi) to 9; Nolan, James, Nora, Charlie, Eva, Ellie, Henry, Ada, and Jonah.

If you were lucky enough to spend time with Edie, her good-byes always included some loving advice. So, following her wishes, we all hope you will "be careful driving and stay safe!"
