Obituary

Charles Baker, 85, passed away on December 31, 2024 after a brief illness.

He grew up in Chicago but moved with his family to the suburbs while in high school. He graduated from Lane Technical High School then served in the Army as a helicopter mechanic. After his stint in the Army, he became a tile installer for his father's company, BG Plastering. He took over the company upon his father's retirement.

Charles was a quiet man who lived a quiet life but enjoyed conversations with people he knew well. He was always up for visits with his extended family when the opportunity arose. He enjoyed watching all of the Chicago sports teams and going to the Arlington Race Track.

He wasn't much of a cook, so he spent a good amount of time at the counter of the now-closed Ritzy's in Rolling Meadows, talking with patrons and staff. He also relished receiving homemade soups and desserts from family.  Like many Chicagoans, he enjoyed a Chicago hot dog (or two) from Portillo's.

Above all else, Charles was a good man.

He is survived by sister Sheron Thomen (Martin), Cathy Fransler (partner to deceased brother James), nieces Kimberly Thomen (Daniel), and Sheron Chapa (Rey), nephews Michael Baker (Laura) and Matthew Baker, stepson Kevin McEnery, stepdaughter Karen Schuett (Ken), Scott Meyer (Mary Beth) and numerous cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents George and Anna Maksomowicz Baker, brother James Baker, and former wife, Judith Hagen.

His family would like to thank the neighbors who were good friends to Charles in his later years.

Services and interment will be private. Funeral care provided by G.L. Hills Funeral Home. For information please call (847) 699-9003.
